Blind Faith

First of all, I want to send a huge, huge thank you out to everyone that responded to my last post. Y'all have no idea how much I appreciate all of the love. Now, that being said, I will be taking a hiatus from blogging to figure some things out.

This past weekend, while I was in VA with my family, I came to the realization that I'm a habitual Muslim. I'm just a Muslim because my family was, I don't know that much about the religion and it didn't really concern me. I was never really unhappy in my faith because I didn't really think about it. I followed all of the big stuff and some of the little stuff. Anything I didn't follow, I just figured wasn't that big of a deal and God would forgive me. I never questioned Islam or anything about it except for once when I was around 10 or 12. I was told that Muslims just need to believe, they shouldn't question God. Since I was a very agreeable child, I just went with that and never thought twice about it. As a result, after I grew up and wasn't attending Qur'an school anymore, I pretty much stopped learning about Islam. I knew what I could and couldn't do and that was that. Well, that's wrong. No religion should be a habit and you should know what you're supposed to believe. Because of that, I will be taking a break from this blog to learn more about Islam and decide where my future lies. When I come back (most likely at the end of the summer) I will let y'all know my decision and the future of this blog.

I hope y'all will understand that this is a journey I have to take for myself. It's high time I learned about the religion I'm supposed to be a part of and practice it accordingly. If I'm unwilling to do that, I need to find something else.

P.S. I'll still be reading your blogs. I can't be out of the loop.

The Approach

Yes, yes, you have read thousands of books
but you have never tried to read your own self

you rush in, into your Mandirs, into your Mosques
but you have never tried to enter your own heart

futile are all your battles with Satan
for you have never tried to fight your own desires

I didn't know what to say in the last post - lot of people said lot of things, some could be useful to you.

I just wish you the best in life and the hereafter.

As a simple word of advice, don't go looking for answers to the tough questions in religion immediately. And seek knowledge from a diverse group of scholars with alternate points of view.

All the best.

Good luck and God Bless You as you go about trying to find the answers to your questions and be the best support you can be to your family.

I know it's hard to be so confused about religion, especially as you watch those around you question things, as well.

Keep praying, and God will guide you where you need to be.

i have just read through your last post as well as this one, and as a lot of people have said, it is difficult to know what to say.
you're right, noone should follow the faith blindly and it can only be a good thing that you want to know more about the faith you have grown up with. I can understand why your mother is fed up with it all due to the actions and character of some Muslims but Islam is perfect even if all Muslims are not:)
one thing i keep getting back from the reverts i know is that it is the concept of tawheed(Oneness) of God that draws them to the faith. it makes sense more than any other religion. in the end, nothing else matters more than that.
i'm sure you'll find your direction and the path you need to take, and i pray that Allah continues to guide you to the straight path.

Like most people, I had no idea what I could say to you in your last post although I read it a few times over. Regardless of what point of life you're in, you still question things in your faith. The learning process is one that takes a lifetime - you learn lessons as you go along and incorporate them into your life to achieve some sort of balance.

I wish you the best of luck in your seek for knowledge. Whatever happens insha'Allah it'll be for your best.

peace,

Okay. I understand.

Recent developments mean I won't be here in the area when you get here (hey- looking for a spot?). But I hear you on stepping back and evaluating. This is something on which you must be sure and you must be sure it is for you and about your truth.

To the list of (excellent) books that have been recommended, I add Believing As Ourselves by J. Lynn Jones. That plus Purification of the Heart are still helping me refine my muslimahness.

Most of all I wish you peace and blessings and more peace no matter what. If you got that you'll be aiight.

as-salam alaykum,

i have close personal friends who've been where you are right now. i guess many of us have in one sense or another. just remember that Allah's mercy is wider than our horizons.

if you're reading blogs, pay a visit to ours at othermatters.org.

this post from the blog was intended for new members of the muslim community: http://othermatters.wordpress.com/2006/05/04/if-youre-going-to-do-this-islam-thing/. i wonder if there's something relevant to those of us who are reexamining our commitment to it.

[if the link doesn't show, just search for "If You're Going to Do this Islam Thing" on the blog]

I think faith can be cyclical. It waxes and wanes...and the questions are natural and important to address.

May He refresh and protect our iman, ihsan and islam every day of our lives and may your journey be one of sincerely seeking the truth.

Warmly,
Baraka

I am very impressed by your writing style MashAllah. And would like to offer my assistance in your journey InshAllah.

I also think that you deserve to share your stories with the world, which is where we may possibly be able to help each other.

I'm a Muslimah filmmaker, and have been looking for someone to partner with to tell our stories.
